San Francisco, CA – February 13, 2025eMOD Safety Inc., a leading construction safety software platform for contractors, today announced its integration with Autodesk Construction Cloud®, a portfolio of software and services that combines advanced technology, a builders network and predictive insights for construction teams, to streamline safety data synchronization and improve project workflows.

Now, construction teams can link projects between eMOD and Autodesk Construction Cloud to sync critical safety documents between the two platforms. As field workers complete Pre-Task Plans, Job Hazard Analyses, or Toolbox Talks in eMOD, the corresponding PDFs save both to eMOD and to the designated safety folder within Autodesk® Build or Autodesk® Docs. Furthermore, an embedded eMOD Project Summary Partner Card within the Autodesk Build Insights dashboard enhances visibility into safety performance.

“Our integration with Autodesk Construction Cloud reduces administrative tasks, allowing teams to focus on proactive safety management,” said Kaitlin Frank, CEO at eMOD Safety. “We’re helping teams stay proactive and compliant while improving overall efficiency by automating safety document management and providing real-time safety insights.”

“Proper safety protocols are essential for the success of any project,” said James Cook, director, industry and technology partnerships at Autodesk. “By saving  eMOD’s safety and compliance documentation to Autodesk Construction Cloud, teams can add to the complete record set for the projects, both for retention and to learn and improve their safety practices.”

With safety documentation integrated into Autodesk Build, project teams can reduce administrative overhead, minimize human errors, and improve overall job site efficiency. By eliminating manual processes, this automation allows superintendents and safety managers to focus on proactive risk management instead of time-consuming paperwork.

ENHANCING SAFETY AND FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE

Independent Study Confirms eMOD Platform Improves Safety and Financial Outcomes.

eMOD Safety Inc., a construction safety software platform for contractors, today announced the findings of a three-year study that show how eMOD significantly improves the safety and financial outcomes on construction job sites. The study measured the safety performance of an ENR Top 400 commercial general contractor handling more than $600 million in annual construction using a full-scale deployment of the eMOD safety application. eMOD is a software platform that facilitates the efficient field deployment of industry-recognized safety best practices interconnected by workflows and logic libraries, all enabled with end-to-end transparency, allowing performance measurement analytics and reporting to verify compliance and drive accountability.

Independent third-party risk manager Arthur J Gallagher, a global insurance brokerage, risk management and consulting services firm, measured safety, insurance, and administrative performance indicators for three years post-eMOD deployment. These results were compared to the five-year period before eMOD when safety practices relied on a mix of paper and disjointed technology platforms.

“The contractor already had a better than industry average safety record, but when they put the eMOD platform in the hands of their workers and field supervisors, there was a profound shift to proactive vs. reactive behaviors and measurements,” said Mathew Kalafatis, Gallagher executive. “There were noted improvements in each of the first two years, and after recognizing the three-year results, it was clearly an accelerating and sustainable trend.”

The report states that OSHA performance indicators such asTotal Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) and Days Away,Restricted or Transferred (DART) decreased by 45.3% and50.9%, respectively. Insurance measures also showedimprovement, with Experience Modification Rate (EMR)dropping by 24.5% and workers’ compensation insurance premiums decreasing by 46.3%. Efficiency in safety administration was also boosted post-eMOD adoption.

Rob Lynch, the subject contractor’s President & CEO stated,“The safety efforts of our field supervisors distinctly shiftedfrom process completion, compliance and enforcement tohigher value pre-planning and preparation. Through theirdaily engagement with eMOD, our workers have becomeincreasingly accountable for their safety performance andthat of those around them.”

“Safety can’t be imposed from an office; those doing the workare the ones at risk,” Kaitlin Frank, eMOD’s Co-Founder & CEOnoted. “That’s why we developed eMOD – to put user-friendlytechnology in the hands of tradespeople, empowering themto integrate safety into their daily tasks. This not only fosters asafer work environment but also provides management withthe tools needed for accountability, trend identification, andongoing improvement. These results affirm our approach andalign with current safety research and my firsthandexperience as a Superintendent.”

Construction has the reputation of being an “old-school” industry, and deservedly so. We don’t like change. It’s easy, of course, to do nothing — to be comfortable with the status quo. Yet there is a hefty cost with this mindset. For me, the most important cost is our eroding safety on the jobsite.

Working in construction is one of the most dangerous professions in the world. As I step into a new role serving as the CEO of eMOD, I am committed to fulfilling our mission of sending our workers home safely every single day. To do so, we’re working hard to continuously improve the eMOD safety platform and extend its reach, helping our workers safely do what they do best: build.

However, tools and tech alone aren’t going to solve all of our safety challenges. We also need to be more diverse and inclusive.

My relationship with safety

I grew up in construction. My dad was a general contractor. He regularly took me to job sites — seeding a lifelong passion for building at a young age. He also took care to explain the hazards of the work, and how important it is to never cut corners and always prioritize safety.

While I trusted he was doing his best to always work safely, I still worried about him. One wrong step, a quick distraction, someone else’s mistake, or a freak accident could suddenly change my entire life. My family was lucky — my dad went to work every day and came home every day.

When I started working in construction, safety was always paramount. And as I advanced my career, my relationship with safety evolved from one of personal interest to one in which I became responsible for the lives and well-being of others.

As a superintendent, I was obligated to take great care of everyone who set foot on my jobsites — to ensure my team members had the training they needed, and to listen to and address any safety concerns.

However, perhaps because of my construction lineage, safety is more to me than just an obligation. It is about respect for life and the love of all people — and their families — regardless of any differences. Especially because of our differences.

To be safe, get comfortable being uncomfortable

“Strangely, life gets harder when you try to make it easy. Exercising might be hard, but never moving makes life harder. Uncomfortable conversations are hard, but avoiding every conflict is harder. Mastering your craft is hard, but having no skills is harder. Easy has a cost.” — James Clear, author of Atomic Habits

There’s a graphic I love that, though there are many variations, features three concentric circles. On the inside is typically the “comfort zone.” On the outside is the “danger zone” and in between is the “learning zone.”

The comfort zone isn’t safe. When we’re too relaxed or comfortable, we can lapse. We lose awareness. If we’re on the outside, we’re careless, hasty, and sloppy. In both the inside and the outside, that’s where danger lurks.

When we’re working in construction, we want to move into the middle, in the learning zone. That’s where our senses are engaged. It’s where our learning and development grow. It may not always be comfortable or easy. But as the quote above suggests, “easy has a cost.”

As the construction industry becomes more diverse and as we intentionally bring more diverse teams to our job sites, one way we can be in the learning zone is to understand inclusion.

Safety goes hand in hand with diversity & inclusion

I’ve always felt I belonged in construction — and specifically on the jobsite — despite being a woman. When my dad took me to jobsites as a child, it never really occurred to me that there were very few women. He never steered me to construction, nor away from it. He always told me, “You can do anything you want.”

Still, I am aware that bias exists and can hold diverse talent back. I’ve certainly witnessed “good ol’ boys” behavior and heard many disparaging and inappropriate comments. And, undeniably, I’ve been treated differently at times simply because I’m a woman. It reinforces for me that we have work to do.

I’ve come to realize that, although it’s sometimes uncomfortable being a woman in a male-dominated industry, this discomfort has helped me to become more aware, to increase my motivation and learning, and to commit myself to a better, safer future. Indeed, it has helped me sit in the learning zone.

Different genders bring different perspectives. Different perspectives help us challenge ourselves. By challenging ourselves, we enable an environment of sitting in the learning zone, a safer place to be. As this article from Harvard Business Review describes, the more diverse a culture, the more successful:

“By breaking up workplace homogeneity, you can allow your employees to become more aware of their own potential biases,” authors David Rock and Heidi Grant write, “entrenched ways of thinking that can otherwise blind them to key information and even lead them to make errors in decision-making processes.”

There’s little doubt in my mind that “errors in decision-making” on the jobsite lead directly to accidents and hazards. Therefore, if we can become more inclusive and diverse, our collective thinking and safety practices will improve — as will our overall safety.

To foster this diverse culture, we need to intentionally be more inclusive. We can bring in diverse talent, but if people do not feel as if they have a voice and can be themselves, we will not retain them. With the continued speed and demands of the construction industry, coupled with a decreasing number of people coming into the industry, we cannot be successful or safer in the future without embracing diversity and inclusion.

eMOD: A tool for understanding safety, while promoting learning

Since we started working on eMOD in 2018, we’ve been determined to deliver a tool that can help teams improve their safety processes. Ultimately, we want to make our dangerous jobs safer by increasing the awareness of hazards while offering tools to decrease the risk of those hazards.

eMOD isn’t designed to increase diversity and inclusion — as a digital tool, it sees no gender, no race, no social classes, nor sexual preferences. However, we’ve seen an undeniable correlation between safety and diversity, and inclusion when it comes to workplace culture.

At its core, eMOD is a job safety analytics product in construction. It naturally appeals to learners and is more likely to be embraced by learning cultures. A diverse and inclusive workforce is more naturally a learning culture. In a learning culture, we’re open-minded to improving upon what we did yesterday — to challenge our long-standing beliefs, and to change how we do our work if it means making it safer for our people.

We can always improve our safety. There are little things we can do that can incrementally improve how we do our work. However, bigger improvements require a bigger change in our mindset. We need to acknowledge that diversity and inclusion are problems in our industry. We need to want to be learners.

If we are open to change, we will improve. If we become more diverse and inclusive, we will increase our skilled labor. If we are open to changing the way we think about safety, our industry safety culture and rating will improve. And if we adopt new technology, we will improve at the rate we need to keep up with the growth.

It’s time to rise to the occasion

The first thing many people noticed about the recent announcement of my new role is that I am a woman in a leadership position within construction — one of the most male-dominated industries

It’s understandable. However, the fact that my gender is what captures people’s attention illuminates our diversity and inclusion challenge. I don’t necessarily want to be known as the woman CEO. Yet, if that label helps shift our mindset toward a more diverse and inclusive industry, I’ll happily wear it. Sitting at the helm of eMOD is an incredible opportunity for me — not as a female leader, but as my authentic self — to help drive change.

I love construction — and I am passionate about safety, diversity, and inclusion. There’s no doubt in my mind that there’s a relationship between them. And I’m so excited to help contribute to meaningful change in the industry I’ve grown up in.

If we work together, we can help the construction industry leave behind the “old-school” reputation. So, let’s all get a little uncomfortable with the current state so that we can evolve and advance the industry that we love. Let’s discourage the status quo — and reject stereotypes and hurtful behavior. Let’s foster an industry-wide culture of learning and inclusion.

Most importantly, let’s strive to create a future jobsite that’s safer, more diverse, and more inclusive than it’s ever been.

Creating a safe workspace is of the utmost importance, no matter the industry. And in construction — one of the most dangerous professions in the world — it’s even more important. When it comes to best safety practices at work, it is essential for companies to prioritize preventing safety lapses and other preventable incidents. Some effective ways to take control of the jobsite are performing a job safety analysis (JSA),  a pre-task plan (PTP), a daily safety plan, and a safety task assessment (STA). Construction safety applications like eMOD streamline the documentation process, getting the field workers back to work sooner.

What is a job safety analysis?

A job safety analysis in construction, otherwise known as a job hazard analysis (JHA), is a technique required by contractors to address and identify any potential hazards on the project site. In doing so, leadership can put into place the strategies necessary to eliminate or otherwise manage the risks that exist.

While a job safety analysis may look different from one business to the next, they generally all consist of the same core steps.

Anatomy of a job safety analysis in construction

When it comes time to ensure worker safety, performing a job safety analysis can be broken down into a few steps. As an example, the eMOD construction safety application helps users do the following:

  • Select the task to analyze
  • Break a task down into core small subtasks
  • Identify hazards for each task
  • Establish safe plans to minimize the safety risk from those hazards

JSAs aim to correct any hazards that have been identified. While JSAs are commonly performed for jobs that have a high potential to cause injury or illness, many construction companies require JSAs to be created for all tasks.

Benefits of a job safety analysis in construction

When we identify potential hazards during the planning process, teams are prepared to safely mitigate the risks of those hazards. Job safety analysis is an essential function for any company looking to protect its workers when dangers lurk on the job.

Here are a few of the most important benefits that regular job hazard analysis can provide.

  1. Improved worker safety: Whether you are operating a retail establishment or a construction site, improved worker safety should always be paramount. The primary focus of job safety analysis through products like eMOD is to prevent accidents rather than simply helping people respond to them.. Preparation is the best way to avoid unfortunate accidents and potentially serious injuries.
  2. Improved communication:  From reviewing the hazards associated with a task or evaluating a team’s prior performance, a job hazard analysis helps open a dialogue among workers and management. Field crews should always review JSAs as a full crew prior to starting work.
  3. Better training for new employees: A job safety analysis can help new hires learn safety best practices consistent with company standards.. New employees are significantly more likely to experience an injury at work than their more seasoned counterparts. A JSA can help ensure employees are prepared when it matters most.
  4. Transparency: In the event of an incident or accident the first thing that gets asked is if a JSA was completed and if the hazard was identified on the JSA.  The JSA plays a large role in the incident investigation process and lessons learned.

We’ve only touched on the most tangible benefits that embracing worker safety can provide. Job safety analysis using the eMOD application can bring about real change on the job site.

what is safety inspection software

Are your jobsites safe for your construction crew? How do you know?

Regardless of the industry, workplace safety should be viewed as a top priority by all organizations. Without proper safety procedures, a company puts its employees and business at risk. It’s essential for companies to ensure every crew member on their site receives up-to-date safety training. When construction companies put health and safety first, business and employees thrive.

So how do you go about promoting workplace safety and identifying potential incidents or accidents before they happen? The absolute best way is to use a trusted safety inspection software.

What Is Safety Inspection Software?

Safety inspection software is used by contractors and frontline workers to perform safety audits, identify, and report potential hazards, and implement corrective actions.

This software allows individuals or teams to streamline the gathering and processing of safety and other daily task data. Most safety inspection software programs provide a single dashboard where all daily tasks and information can be accessed, monitored, managed, and stored.

Why Is Construction Safety Inspection Software Important?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that a worker died every 111 minutes from a work-related injury in 2020. If that’s not enough to make you pay attention, how about this next statistic. According to OSHA, 5,333 workers died on the job in 2019. That’s more than 15 deaths every day.

As a business owner, it’s your responsibility to provide a safe work environment for your employees. Construction safety inspection software plays a major role in the identification of potential hazards, as well as providing communication, documentation, and implementation for the correction of those hazards.

Safety inspection software will help with the following:

  • Identify hazards that need to be addressed and corrected.
  • Identify and document areas for improvement.
  • Helps management identify where the field might be struggling and what additional training and support are needed.
  • Enables you to see trending observations on multiple levels (by person, company, project, or the entire company).

The point of safety audits and inspections is not to point fingers, but to identify where changes, improvements, or additional training are needed. Then you will use the tracking feature of your safety inspection software to track and document the progress of corrections.

Why Is it Important to Document the Status of Your Jobsite?

Documenting the status of your jobsite (which is what construction safety inspection software does) will help identify (and document) everything that is compliant, so you have a verifiable record in case something does happen. It will also identify, document, and implement corrections for all non-compliant items. Doing so will help protect you from liability lawsuits while helping to protect your employees at the same time.

What If My Jobsite Is Currently Compliant?

You might think your job site is safe and compliant, but no jobsite is perfect. We would be willing to bet that if you don’t find any open items during a jobsite walk, you are not looking hard enough.

How Often Do I Need to Perform Jobsite Safety Inspections?

Technically, there is no exact time frame specified for performing a jobsite safety inspection because all industry jobsites are different. However, you can use the following as a guideline to evaluate when your company should perform a jobsite safety inspection:

  • What are the jobsite operations for any given environment and the equipment that’s being used for that environment?
  • How many shifts for any given jobsite and how many workers are on each shift?
  • Perform frequent inspections any time new systems, equipment, workers, and/or regulations are added.
  • How many past incidents, almost accidents or risky activities have occurred? It’s recommended you perform frequent jobsite safety inspections until those numbers significantly decrease.

It’s not every day that when you ask someone about their biggest career highlight, the first thing they mention is safety. But that’s exactly what Carlos Zavala did when we spoke to the Fluor superintendent.

Carlos, who’s been working construction for 12 years, was named the eMOD Construction Safety Hero for December – and for good reason. He, nor any of his contractors or sub-contractors that he’s overseen on his projects, have ever had a major safety incident.

“I take pride in having zero major accidents,” he said. “So, I consider that a major achievement.”

The 38-year-old has earned the respect of his peers — especially when it comes to his diligence with safety. “Carlos can be counted on to resolve a safety concern either that he notices or is brought to his attention,” said Isaac Thompson, Fluor’s HSE supervisor. “He follows up to ensure it is done and follows up with the person who brought it to his attention.”

We recently met with Carlos to talk about his views on safety and construction, and here’s what he had to say:

What does being safe mean in your day-to-day work?

Being safe is about completing each work activity as safely as possible. So, without taking any shortcuts and doing it properly. Also, making sure no one is exposed to any hazards and mitigating the hazards as much as possible. And making sure no one gets hurt throughout the day — so they can go home safely.

What are some of the biggest hazards that you see in your daily work?

It’s a lot of a machine-human interface — that’s pretty common here since we have a lot of activities going on pretty near to each other, and a lot of heavy equipment working nearby.

Things like heavy trucks loaded with steel driving by, areas where you know people are working. And a lot of working in heights, and the possibility of falling objects from heights. And on days like today, when we have rain in the morning, it could be pretty slippery working out on the steel.

Is there anything about safety that keeps you up at night?

Outside of work, I’m always thinking of the next day. What are the things we’re going to be doing and how are we going to make sure the guys are safe and go home at the end of the day? It’s a lot of responsibility to make sure everyone is safe.

Do you ever find it difficult to talk about safety when a lot of people just want to get the work done and go home?

Oh yeah. Some workers don’t want to spend too much time talking about safety. But I find the beginning of the shift to be a good time. When everybody gets here, that’s when people pay attention and you can talk about safety and kind of plan out the whole day.

What do you think is the biggest challenge when it comes to safety and construction?

I think the biggest challenge is that there are a lot of contractors and crews who have their own ways of doing things and their own company policies. And at Fluor, with safety, we go beyond the OSHA requirements. So sometimes it’s a little challenging to try to tell subcontractors they need to follow our safety policies. But at the end of the day, at the end of the project, they often thank us because we raised their safety awareness level. Sometimes they take our policies into the next job site and the next project. So that’s a huge compliment.

Do you think that safety has improved in construction since you started?

Yeah, I think so. Contractors are more aware and companies are more focused on safety. Now you see a lot more safety personnel on the job site.

Do you think that safety could be improved anymore even more?

I think so. In general, having more workers safety being conscious at the start of a project versus just trying to come out here and doing the work you as fast as possible and leave. It’s more of a mindset than anything specific — and it has been improving a lot.

Sounds like you’ve been using eMOD a lot. How is it working for you?

I’ve really enjoyed it – and we’ve made some adjustments to it based on how we work and implement safety at the site. So it’s really helpful. When our contractors use it, they get more familiar with it and it becomes easier for them. It’s much easier to do PTP’s (pre-task plans) with eMOD — so that’s been a significant improvement.

So, what does it mean to you to be named a safety hero?

It’s an honor. It feels great that Isaac nominated me. I’m glad that people are noticing how hard we’re working out here.

Thanks for your time Carlos — and congratulations!

What is the eMOD Safety Hero Award?

Once a month, eMOD highlights someone working in the commercial construction industry who practices their craft with a safety-first approach. We recognize heroes who put safety ahead of productivity, who take action today to make our work safer tomorrow, who do the right thing rather than the most convenient. They promote accountability among team members, champion the latest safety practices, and encourage transparency about hazardous situations as they arise.

Many organizations have an environmental health and safety (EHS) department in place. This department is dedicated solely to environmental protections, occupational health and safety, and safety at work. It also ensures the organization maintains all compliance requirements to standards affiliated with the work they are doing. While EHS is a small component of operating a business, it needs to be managed properly to mitigate costly risks and to ensure compliance is met.

Yet, many companies find that EHS management isn’t a priority until there is a problem, especially as it relates to compliance. Here’s what you should know about environmental health and safety and its impact on your business.

What Is EHS Compliance?

Most business owners and managers should have some idea of what environmental health and safety is and how it impacts the work they are doing. Generally, it refers to any laws, regulations, and workplace procedures that are designed and maintained to protect workers on the job. EHS compliance, then, is the steps you take to ensure you stay within these regulations to keep your workers safe.

There are various forms of this, such as meeting OSHA guidelines. It is also necessary to keep the public safe while you are operating your business. Another way to look at EHS is as a legal requirement. It is a legal obligation for your business to properly maintain the safety of workers and the public as a whole. When this does not happen, the company is subject to inspections and, in some cases, punitive actions. It also impacts public reputation for the company. As a result, EHS compliance is critical to get right because it may impact all aspects of the business’s operations now and in the future.

What Are Your EHS Responsibilities?

There are differences in EHS compliance based on the industry. However, OSHA regulations will outline the specific responsibilities of workers to provide them with a safe working environment. This is defined under the Workers’ Rights. There are several ways this can impact the way you do business. Here are some examples:

  • The work environment needs to be hazard-free.
  • Workplace tasks and environments need to be OSHA-compliant.
  • Employees need to have proper safety training based on the tasks they may perform on the job.
  • All personal protective equipment that an employee needs to remain safe on the job must be available to them.
  • Employees need to have well-maintained equipment and tools that limit any risk to them during the normal course of the work they do.
  • Chemicals are stored safely when they pose a danger to employees.
  • Elimination of respiratory hazards allows employees to breathe normally.

How Do You Know What’s Specific to Your Situation?

Creating an EHS management system is the ultimate goal. This allows you to have a system in place to mitigate the risks that impact your employees and the public as a whole based on the type of work you are doing. This system also helps the company to maintain regulatory compliance overall by ensuring all of the checks and balances are in place.

The first step in creating this is to know which regulations apply to the business you are operating. To do this, work with OSHA and local health departments to know what regulations impact the type of work you are doing. It may be beneficial for companies to hire a specific person to help them to gather this information and to make sure they are on the right track to compliance. Working with an attorney familiar with the legal aspects of the process may also be an important decision.

Regulations on health and safety are often updated over time. It’s important to have a system in place that allows you to constantly maintain the most up-to-date rules and procedures.

Once you know what the regulations are, the next step is to ensure your company is following them. This may include creating procedures and rules within the company to ensure that everyone is following the necessary steps to maintain operations in a safe manner. It also means following up and providing training to leaders and employees to ensure there is no risk of missed compliance.

How an EHS System Can Help in the Construction Industry

It’s not always easy to ensure every employee is following safety guidelines on a constant basis, especially in some environments where conditions are changing quickly. Yet, the use of an EHS management system may help to provide some relief. The system involves several working components:

  • Utilize the system to identify potential hazards and create a plan for the safe and efficient execution of construction activities. This needs to be jobsite specific, providing very specific insights into onsite hazards with chemicals, fall risks, unsteady surfaces, and more.
  • Use the system to both implement new safety programs and keep programs current and effective. This may include oversight of safety and hazards on a construction project, and offers tools such as checklists to allow for constant focus on safety standards. It can also help with updating new safety rules and standards when conditions change.
  • Maintain existing and incorporate new certifications for the construction industry. Be sure all construction employees have applicable certifications and, if not, they are progressing through necessary training to obtain them.

A good manager must be at the head of the company’s EHS awareness. They develop plans and protocols that every member of the company needs to follow to mitigate risks associated with employee safety. This manager oversees the use of these protocols throughout the workday and through other leadership.

The system works to find problems before they become problems and offers solutions for overcoming them. When there is an effective strategy in place, it is possible to ensure all safety and health programs are functioning as they should. If there are problems, such as a safety incident, the system works to analyze what occurred and why, helping to create solutions to minimize risks going forward.
